Product Photoshoot

As our product neared completion we were keen to spend time to photograph the kits and kit contents to our best ability.Myself and Paget spent a morning preparing the set and photographing the finalised kit. With the lighting setup we were also able to get some finalised product shots for our concept video.

Storyboard – Video

As part of our final client submission we wanted to create a concept video. I was tasked with storyboarding and writing the script for the video. There was a story arc I wanted to use to communicate our problem. The style would very much be influenced by modern product videos for aspirational products.

The story arc was as follows:

  • Introduce the Problem – Lack of awareness and not meeting WHO guidelines
  • Introduce EEK
  • How do we solve the problem
  • What more can we do

After storyboarding the concept I used an online scripting programme called which is an amazing free programme to quickly write scripts. As we would be using Voiceover it also allows you to separate VO from scene descriptions.


School – User testing

Through a friend I was able to setup access to a sixth class in a local school St Catherines on Donore Street. Jane Honner and her class were more than welcoming. I helped coordinate the session and focus of the session in the school. Our aim was to go to the school with low fidelity prototypes and test out the Vaseline Catching Air activity which would form as part of Kit 1. Paget McCormack put together this great video which summarises our visit.


Packaging and Print design

I worked closely with Paget McCormack and Yana Shmatova to design the packaging and print collateral for the eek product. Paget was at a stage where he had the product form complete – I was then able to take the form and apply our branding. Similarly with the teacher resources handbook Yana had the content ready to go. To design both I used Adobe Indesign and created a low fidelity prototype to test with. Once we were happy with the low fidelity versions I prepared the deliverables for print.



Branding our EEK


For our product we wanted to establish a strong brand style that reflected the values and core concept. We started with the initial style of purple and grey to represent the entire eek company. For the streams we wanted to use primary colours of Yellow for Air, Red for Soil, Green for Waste and Blue for water.

We created a brand style tile which you can see here so that all members of the team can apply to any part of the product that they are working on.

Eek – The octopus

After some research in to existing educational platforms and schemes it was obvious that a character was effective in delivering the message and kids could relate to it. We focused on an Octopus as main character as we felt it shared some of our key values. Some interesting facts about Octopuses;

  • Octopuses are considered the most intelligent of all invertebrates.
  • As active predators they need to explore, understand and remember their environment and the behaviour of other animals.
  • Studies have shown that octopuses learn easily, including learning by observation of another octopus.
  • They are the first invertebrates to be seen using tools, such as using coconut shells to hide from potential predators and using rocks and jets of water in a way that could be classified as tool use.
  • We really felt these represented and reflected our projects goal and concepts. After some sketching eek our octopus was born..


Sitemap – Digital Development

After we presented our three concepts to the client as a group we started to unpick the elements from all three which we really liked. This was the start of our final concept. In summary it was to include;

  • The low-fi element of the Airssembly pack
  • The mapping and digital element of the Pass the Parcel concept
  • The character and relatable element of the Aeir-Chairde concept

My first task on this next step was to design and layout what we believed to be the Sitemap and digital requirements for the concept. I presented the following document to the team. Although we were very happy with the initial approach we knew there were elements we would need to refine. At this point we identified this as version 1.0 of the sitemap and digital concept. After this point I handed the digital production over to Louise Heywood as I was to move to branding and concept generation. However we continued to collaborate and refine together over the next iterations.

Concept Development

As the project was progressing I was very interested in designing a service which would incorporate education and awareness. Hence this is the area our newly formed group was focused on. After some initial concept generation and ideation our group moved in to developing three concepts to present to the client. Our primary target audience was Parents, School Teachers and as a result kids. We would design and deliver a service which could be rolled out through schools.

The three concepts were:


Aeir Chairde

This concept was a way for schools to relate to Air quality through a tomagothci or character. The character would be nurtured by the kids over a period of weeks/months and it would respond to variances in Air Quality. It would encourage enagament and participation through activities and games around the school and local community.

Pass the Parcel

Pass the Parcel

For this concept we wanted to play off the idea that schools would become Air Quality ambassadors for a period of time. During which time they would receive a kit from the EPA with different tools and methods for measuring Air Quality. As the pack was passed on it encouraged engagement with other schools and community while having a subtle element of competition. As the pack moved around the country it would be mapped online and have an element of ‘discover Ireland’ about it.



This concept was to deliver to all schools a low-fi Air Quality kit for use by students and teachers. It would incorporate a set of activities that children could easily understand and engage with. There would be elements of the pack which require the kids to bring items home thus encouraging a behavioural or awareness at home also.

Insights and Making Meaning

After our research presentation to the client we were at a point where we had to unpack and begin to make meaning of all the data we had. This was possibly the most challenging part of the project. We had conducted about 100 interviews, one full week of secondary research and countless hours spent thinking about the project. To help move this forward I brought to the group several brainstorming and ideation methods I had found on the IDEO Design Kit site Some of the techniques we worked through:
